Live Your Most Beautiful Life

People think that her skin was lightened for the purpose of this magazine cover. They also think that it is strange that her body isn't really seen in this photo, compared to the three other Elle magazine covers for this special October edition:

My opinion? I really like Elle magazine, and I don't think the hype is really worth all the attention. First of all - if you shine certain lights on darker skin tones, the skin simply appears lighter. When I first saw the photo, I never thought they retouched the photo - I just assumed they used certain lighting that made her skin appear the way it did. But that is just my two cents on that issue.
Regarding her body size in the photo, I do think that is strange. I can't think of any justification for why her body isn't seen. They could have easily dressed her to show off her curves and accentuate her physical features. So I'm not sure what is going on there....
What are your thoughts?

I feel as though there was too much light in this picture and also that someone should have spoke up about the wig she has on. Overall this cover didn't show the true Gabourey Sidibe in any way.Im a Photographer and Ive been a Photographer for years
the lighting thing is WRONG!
people who are originally light toned to begin with will appear light in cam,OBVIOUSLY!..Alek wek still looks dark in any bright lighting,so does wesley snipes and others.. the brighter the better when it comes to lighting because it brings out your true tones.Personal preference. WE HUMANS ALSO DONT TAKE PICS IN THE DARK! Ive seen pics where its a group photo and the light people appeared pale and darker toned people still appear darker toned. Its a basic concept.
Dark skin will appear dark skkin regardless, light skin will appear light on cam regardless! Lighting doesnt change skintone, if that were the case wesley snipes and the rest of black celebrities would be looking caucasian. please dont say "lighting" it is not lighting! Pale people will appear pale on cam, dark skinned people will appear dark. lighting only brings out the true tones.
White or Light skin shows out better in front of the camera then dark skin. It has to do with reflection of light. White or light skin reflect light 100 fold better then dark skin (which absorbs it). And if you know anything about cameras u know the object that is being captured by the camera has to reflect the light projected unto it in order to be caught by the camera lens.
Your comment was ver mean spirited and tacky.

To be honest, when I first saw this pic, I didn't like it at all. I felt that whomever took that pic of Gabby lighten it up way to much and it just took something away from her natural beauty. She is a full figured dark skinned young woman and to put her on the cover of such a high fashion magizine looking so "plastic" IMO is just wrong. Rene Syler wrote an article about it and she was heated because she felt the same way and felt someone in Gabby's inner circle should have said something. She feels as I do that it sends the wrong messege to young girls, young dark skinned girls in particualr that "lighter" is better and Mrs. Syler deals with hollywood so she knows how the ins and out of how "hollywood" works so I would believe she knows what she is talking about. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and this to shall pass... but IMO the way that pic displayed her is just wrong.she still looks dark, lighting doesnt lighten you and neither does makeup ro anythign else. The photo that was uploaded in comparison was a photo when she was very dark from the sun.

I think its lighting; you can get this same result with a regular camera with a bright flash on a woman with the same skin tone (its been done). As far as not showing her full figure; it probably has a lot to do with her size. You have to consider that perhaps it is difficult to put her full size as a cover page.
I do think they could have did something else with her hair. The wig doesn't do her justice that's for sure.
You "thought" wrong! Im sorry but reading what you wrote was insane.

Go on any movie set and they use alot of lighting, obviously you wont see wesley snipes looking caucasian. even photoshopping dark skint o light is basically impossible. gabriele doesnt look light and she will never look light because she is a plus size dark skinned black woman. she will always appear that way.
