Jan. 31, 2012: Stretching to the Finish Line! 4 Months of Stretching My Relaxer

Off the the stretching finish line! For the last relaxer, I stretched 15 weeks. For this relaxer, I'm pushing it for a week more (16 weeks). It may just be an additional week of stretching, but I believe in taking it week by week when it comes to adding on stretching time. That way, I slowly evolve with learning how to take care of additional new growth over time.

I have to pat myself on the back with this one: By Valentine's Day week, I will have reached four months of stretching my…

Do Men Really Prefer Long Hair?

I just came across some random youtube videos of women combing really long hair, and as much as I found the hair itself lovely, I was slightly disturbed by the amount of male commenters underneath the videos stating that the hair was "so sexy," etc. I understand that these people could simply have a long hair fetish, but I then wondered if men…

August 7, 2011: Further Increase in Hair Length! (see pic)

Hey everyone! I am happy with my hair progress so far. I got my hair relaxed on July 16, 2011 (after 12 weeks of stretching my relaxer). I mentioned in my last post that I was considering pushing the stretching past 12 weeks, but I really felt it was time when July 16 came around. The relaxer went really well (The ORS Olive Oil relaxer was used on my hair and it is amazing!). My scalp felt great (I used the "regular" version of the relaxer), the hair came out silky and shiny, and a bit…

Weaves and Braids: Are They Really That Bad?

I saw a post on Facebook re: a blog/article on HelloBeautiful.com reporting that weaves and braids have been shown to contribute to thinning and balding problems among black women. According to the article, " A recent study of middle aged black women reveals that nearly 30% have sustained permanent scalp and…

Healthy Hair and Patience: An Inseparable Pair

A well-known image of a black girl and her hair during her youth: a girl sitting on a chair while her mother is trying to style and comb through her hair, sometimes in such a painful rush that the girl is sitting there close to tears because of the constant tugging on her hair and her tender scalp. Rushing…

Convincing Yourself Not to Use Heat on Your Tresses!

If you have relaxed hair, it is very tempting to always use heat on your hair in order to achieve certain styles on a day to day basis. You may embrace the idea of not using heat on your hair, but you find it hard to achieve this approach because it is really hard to make the adjustment and change your hairstyle if…

Curly Hair by Gina Rivera

Hi Ladies,

I thought I would explain to you guys what I'm all about.

I have been a stylist for 35 years (WOW) and the owner of Hair's Talent for 26 years. What I love to do and do very well is HAIR!!

Notice I didn't say running a business. LOL . Sadly, that's the problem with many people. They have a passion for their craft. They think opening a business is what they want but it ends up dragging them down. Unfortunately, they end up loosing the passion for what they…

Jan. 26, 2011: Stretching Relaxer and Air-Drying

January 26, 2011: Stretching Relaxer and Air-Drying

So, I've been doing pretty well with the stretching - I'm 10 weeks post relaxer and my hair seems to be managing well. Some of the key things that I do: I wash and condition it about 2-3 times per week and try to deep condition (hair repair mask, 30 minutes, under a hooded dryer) each time. In terms of styling, I've enjoyed blow-drying my hair and skipping the flat iron step because when I wrapped my hair up with some Chi Silk…

Jan. 18, 2011: Stretching Relaxer and Blow Out

January 18, 2011: Stretching Relaxer and Blow Out

Today, I washed/conditioned/and deep conditioned my hair. It really needed it because my hair felt overwhelmed with coconut oil and my scalp felt like it needed to be refreshed. After the whole washing/conditioning process, I decided not to do a braidout (I wanted a change) and did a blowout instead (without flat iron work afterwards).

How I did it: I prepped my hair with "It's a 10 Miracle Leave In" spray. I wrapped my…

Dec. 29, 2010: I love coconut oil!

December 29, 2010:

I woke up this morning with my hair feeling really weighed down and stiff from the use of Wave Nouveau and KeraCare's Edge Tamer (another product that I put in my hair to just specifically smooth my edges). Wasn't thrilled at all. I was nervous about possible breakage, so I couldn't wait to wash my hair with Joico. This time, I didn't air dry it. I went through the process of carefully blow drying and flat ironing my hair (using…

Dec. 28, 2010: Protective hair styling (w/pics)

December 28, 2010:

So I've been on a search for a set of protective styles that I like that are not only wearable in a professional setting, but also protect my hair as well with no heat necessary (I heat-style my bangs - that's it). Well, I found one! When I took down my wrap this morning, my hair felt silky and a bit wavy. The roots were especially flat and wavy. I moisturized my hair with MoroccanOil. My ends were a bit dry, so I added some…

Dec. 24, 2010: Hair styling, hair vitamins, hair length, and nape area issue

December 24, 2010:

Overall: My hair feels incredibly silky today.

Hair styling: Did the usual moisturization with MoroccanOil (MO) and gently twisted hair up into a butterfly clip. Blew my full bangs out a little bit with a blow dryer to get them flat after wearing a curler in them overnight.

Vitamins: I've already taken 2 out of the 3 daily "Hair, Skin and Nail" vitamins for the day. The brand: "Spring…
